Norman Lowell fined for contempt of court [09/06/2005]
Norman Lowell was fined Lm30 for contempt of court. Mr Lowell did not turn up for a hearing relating to an article published in Maltafly and the beginning of a new case related to racial comments passed during a public meeting. [Times of Malta, Breaking News]

Stormin' Norman has been arraigned in court for racial comments as well as for an article published in Maltafly. He has been fined a miserly Lm30 for not turning up in court. I am convinced he is dying to be put behind bars and thus raise his cause for martyrdom. All those sorry men and women who look up to this man would then be definitely hypnotised by his calls for action - it is the last cherry he needs in order to be able to write his own Mein Kampf from behind the imaginary iron curtain.

I wonder whether he is allowed to choose his jail companions if he ever ends up there. Or whether he will be served up with a couple of violent specimen of the kind he occasionally attacks in his frequent exercises in oratorial comedy.

Norm, you've made us laugh, you've shaken whatever you have to shake. Now go home and paint... you are not a politician.

That's as maybe. And being a lad of (confused) Hebrew extraction myself, I'd as soon give him an industrial-strength dose of Zyklon B than shake his ham-fisted hand. NEVERTHELESS... No matter how ridiculous and OTT, racist and hateful, bizarre and obscene his views and comments may be... I still feel he should have the freedom to say his piece then piss off whenever he deems it opportune. OK, so he may be slightly to the right of Adolf Eichmann and his 'policies' (I'm being uncharacteristically polite here) might be better suited to the Rwandan Hutu-Power department for the promotion of racial harmony (Machete division III).... But he should be able to expound his pathetic prattlings nonetheless. I'm not too sure about the fines and the threats of jail either. With most people agreeing that Lowell IS one sandwich short of a picnic, as well as consensus being reached publicly that his verbal projectile-vomiting is precisely just that, it's easy enough to throw the legal book at him and gag him permanently. But hasn't that been the time-honoured manner in which the authorities, institutions and the powers-that-be censor, silence and then, slowly but surely, PERSECUTE voices of dissent and dissatisfaction? It might be (Ab)normal Norm today... but who says it can't be you or me tomorrow? And let's face it... with these philistine fuckers, hypocritical whores and Vatican-vipers in power (on a mission to eradicate the loathesome liberal elements among us), it's not all that far-fetched is it? Rather have nazi nutters freely spreading the gospel of Goebbels than NOTHING that's liable to rock the ship of state.

For that matter, he's not even a painter.

just because i told him to go home and paint it does not mean i like his paintings. but at least at home no one is bothered.

I too will fight for anyone's right to speak. I just find the people who cannot see through NL rather sad.

Oh Land of Milk and honey!

Jacques,

I forgot to tell you, next to "align=right" in the 'img' tag, put in also "hspace=10 vspace=10" so that the text doesn't appear so close to the picture.

Hmmm I think there's a difference between freedom of speech and what Norman says. He is definitely abusing of his rights and is guilty of inciting racial hatred. So why shouldn't he be punished?

Jacques René Zammit a dit…

thanks twanny!
see you soon!

hazevi a dit…

Why shouldn't he be punished? Fuck 'im. They could shove electrodes up his arse and crank it to Full till the cows come home for all I care. But if you DO slap his wrist and use the law...it's opening a HUGE can of worms. In the current mood prevailing on this sorry lump of igneous rock we've chosen to inhabit, IDEAS and the people who express them are slowly being deemed DANGEROUS, Threatening, by the powers that be. And when you're in authority YOU decide who the evil-doers are. Today it's Norman 'Arbeit Macht Frei' Lowell, because he's the obvious first choice. Then what? Where do you draw the line? WHO draws the line? That's even more worrying. Reprehensible and obnoxious as what he stands for may be... The potential alternatives to having him and those of his ilk on the loose...terrify me!

He is not a politician (and neither a painter)...

But in his absence, who is supposed to address the immigration problem from a realistic (albeit exaggerated at times) point of view? By realistic, I am excluding the Church's views, I'm sorry.

I also find it funny that he is to be arraigned in court over that particular meeting... where his speech (which I listened to on the video) was perhaps one of the most 'neutral'. (!)

While I cannot fathom his ideas of a united Europe and cannot consider myself to be a believer of his surreal plans (I don't really care for wild boars running around), I still think there is something wrong with his prosecution. Why did they take five months to prosecute him? Is it just a coincidence that the immigration season is just about to begin? Why silence him and not let him make a fool of himself and 'self-destruct', if the government (and many others) really believe that what NL has to say on the immigration problem is simply crap and absurd?

Just some food for thought.

hazevi a dit…

Why now? Simply put, it's because our glorious Gonzo government is in deep, deep doo-doo all round and is obliged to clutch at straws so as to display a semblance of being in control. How is this achieved? By announcing to the Great Unwashed, in no uncertain terms, that a battle of biblical proportions is being wrought in this country... A conflict between the forces of good and Satan's evil minions. Re: forces of good etc. please read... The P.N. establishment VS. Whoever doesn't approve of the way in which the current incumbents are flailing about, tits-over-arse. So we've created an 'enemy' now. In the time-honoured tradition of pulling cotoon-wool over the public's eyes, and in such a way as to take people's minds off petty domestic issues such as the sinking economy, the catastrophic state of the national infrastructure, the serious, gaping holes in the fabric of Maltese society... In order to distract our attention from what REALLY matters...we've got a prequel to the final battle on Har Megiddu being played out right in front of our eyes. And you, me, and everybody else who cries FOUL! will be put in the Darth Vader category. It's just a matter of time. Think about it. The baby-killers (whoever they may be)... the Liberal Elite... yah-hah!?!?... Norman Lowell is easy. Everybody loves to hate him so it's a logical choice to give a more tangible face to one of the 'Enemies of Values and Morality'. Why now? Because it's expedient. Because NL fits into the scheme of things. Does all this sound like an Oliver Stonian conspiracy theory? Maybe. But I wouldn't put anything past people who, in the year 2005, have the unmitigated gall to come up with terms like Liberal Elite!

Kenneth a dit…

I think the abortion issue is the current red herring.

hazevi a dit…

Yup... read: "Think about it. The baby-killers (whoever they may be)...". It's all part of the Big Sleep technique.

Antoine Cassar a dit…

Haha, the Big Sleep technique, the television (especially the program Sa Tkun Int li Tivvotalna) takes care of that... I think it's called "Hypnopedia"... :-)

A. Of course not, your Horror, Sir. I would never do such a thing. If and when Justice eventually makes an appearance on these shores I'll be the first to applaud.

Hazevi,
Since when has Malta been an igneous rock? As any fool can tell you, Malta is comprised chiefly of limestone, Globigerina and Coralline constituting the bulk thereof. You must be confusing it with the Aeolian Islands, though heaven only knows why.

Jacques René Zammit a dit…

a particularly picky point vlad. what is it that you eat in the morning?

Igneous schmigneous. If I said 'a petrified conglomeration of fossilized faeces' would I still get the limestone spiel? Just asking. you know. For future reference. Just so's I know what to REALLY focus on. :)

Kenneth a dit…

Btw, dak ir-ritratt sabi? wisq *nods*

vlad a dit…

Well, describing something as a petrified fossil strikes as something of a redundancy, but if you do want to force a metaphor on the debate, you may wish to use the correct geological classification of the Maltese islands; namely sedentary.

Petrifier a dit…

When we become the New York (discrimination lawsuits for not being promoted + schools favoring whites) of the Med, where will we go? Oh, Djibouti. Seriously, be realistic, (fuck the Roman Catholic Church of Horse Shyt) these so called refugees are full of shyt. If they really were refugees, by all means, let them in. My forefathers didn't just take a boat across the pond and sneak into the once mighty and great US-admittedly admission standards were much more lax. Not saying Maltese don't do it, but if you look at 60% of AA they all live off welfare sporting the latest fashions, technology, etc. At least people here claim welfare and work at the same time. One more point. Maybe we should take a cue from Holland. What makes us think we can rectify the problems (integration) that they have been unable to rectify? We can't. These people don't want to integrate in a culture (not like W. + Eastern Europeans in the 1st half of the 20th century who were fleeing religious and political and economic hardships) not their own (Mexicans in the U.S.).
