World Refugee Day

5,776 irregular migrants have reached Malta since 1996
'Refugees are defined as persons who are outside their country and cannot return owing to a well-founded fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group.'
United Nations, 1951
'On only one occasion does the Hebrew Bible command us to love our neighbour, but in 37 places it commands us to love the stranger. Our neighbour is one we love because he is like ourselves. The stranger is one we are taught to love precisely because he is not like ourselves.'
Jonathan Sacks
In countries where people have to flee their homes because of persecution and violence, political solutions must be found, peace and tolerance restored, so that refugees can return home. In my experience, going home is the deepest wish of most refugees.
Angelina Jolie
The sad truth is that most evil is done by people
who never make up their minds to be either good or evil.
Hannah Arendt (refugee)
Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.
Albert Einstein (refugee)
We are not myths of the past, ruins in the jungle, or zoos. We are people and we want to be respected, not to be victims of intolerance and racism.
Rigoberta Menchù Tum (refugee)
* note. The Lamppost Movement Manifesto is still being drafted. I apologise for the delay.

Here's Anthony Licali in today's Times about the poor, misunderstood chaps of the Maltese far right (not to be mistaken with the extreme right ... presumably):

Left-far right dialogue is possible

I am not here referring to extreme right or fascist sentiments, which have unfortunately always existed in Malta. The far right in Malta seems to me very distant from the right in its construction of ideological sentiment. Its stated point of departure is patriotism - which may be clumsily expressed. This is the same point of departure of the left which, by its active patriotism, distinguishes itself from the right - whose main characteristics are a love for capitalism, a passion for Christian fundamentalism, a serious case of inferiority complex and an energetic drive to please the few while frustrating the many. Under such circumstances, I see the existence of dialogue between left and far right in Malta, a prudent possibility. This is, of course, my personal opinion, as I do not represent any group.
